Browsing the web with an out-dated browser is not very wise. There are all sorts of security risks involved. Besides, it’s a pain in the ass for every web developer and designer to make websites work with old browsers.
Let’s take a look at Internet Explorer 6 for example. We’re talking about a browser that is not developed anymore, because Internet Explorer 7 has come to replace it. IE6 also has been quite insecure. Still it is very much in use today, as these statistics prove.
Some good signs are to be seen though, but you could hope a quicker development in moving out of IE6:
IE6 usage stats (from January to October 2007):
usage has decreased in nine months from 42.3% to 34.5%
[ Source: W3Schools Browser Statistics ]How long will it approximately take to get to zero per cent?
The answer: almost 40 months which equals approximately 3.3 years
Although it seems very unsafe to use IE6, I can see the reasons behind it. It all comes down to three things:
- people get used to using a particular program
- people might not know they are using an outdated browser
- all web applications might not yet work with other browsers (yes, it is the web developer’s fault for designing stuff for one browser only).
Also the new UI of IE7 might be a little bit too much for some. When I first saw it, I was amazed. How can they mess it up like that and think that people will learn to use it right away?
But luckily, you’ve got other options than the IE browser family. It seems that Firefox has become the most popular browser. And I must say that it is for a reason. For instance, it had tabbed browsing enabled for ages before IE7 was introduced. It doesn’t have as concerning security issues as IE, and those issues get fixed much faster. And you’ve got a helluva choice of add-ons.
In conclusion, if you are using IE6 (or some even older browser) I suggest you take a look at IE7 or Mozilla Firefox and switch to one of them (and you can install both of them, if you want to). And if you get interested about other browsers (yes, there are even more!) you can take a look at evolt.org Browser Archive. Who said you don’t have options?!?

A new beginning · Sunday January 14, 2007
It was about a year ago that I launched my previous homepage. Even though it has been fun and interesting to develop Wädeweb, it is time for a new direction. The birth of Waatti.org.
Looking back at the things I achieved with Wädeweb, I can say I’m quite satisfied with it, but I’m hoping to achieve a lot more this time. Biggest problems with Wädeweb in my opinion were the lack of updates and the amateurism that gleamed through it. I have lots of more experience now and I hope I can use that experience to make this website much better than the last one. We’ll see as time flows by…
So what is going to change now that Waatti.org has born? First of all, this time I’m using Textpattern as my CMS and I think it’s going to make updating content a lot easier. With Wädeweb I used my own CMS, which was nothing but a slipshod interface to update thoughts and my record collection on the site. Other content was more or less updated manually, although I automatized some things with PHP code. One word to describe it: amateurish.
Going further with planning Waatti.org I thought I’d begin to make some free website templates to be featured here. Playing with CSS is one of my favourite hobbies right now, so why wouldn’t I practice it more and share my creations with you guys.

Why are rounded corners so popular? · Wednesday June 14, 2006
I have heard many people asking why rounded corners are so popular in today’s web design. I tried to come up with some possible reasons, check them out and have a laugh.
Reason 1: Natural shape
I think one reason might be that a round shape looks natural to the human eye. After all, you don’t see too many straight lines in nature, do you? Clouds in the sky are not rectangles, many fruits and vegetables are round (apples, oranges, potatoes) and the Sun is also round. My point is that we are used to looking at round things, so it’s natural to like rounded corners.
Reason 2: Warm and soft feel
In relation to naturality, I think we consider round objects easier and safer to approach. They have a warmer ‘feel’ about them than straight-edge objects. I bet your coffee mug handle has rounded corners, not straight and sharp ones?
Reason 3: Women
Oh yes, my favourite reason made up so far. Come on, think about women for a while (if you weren’t thinking about them already!). They sure have lots of nice round shapes, don’t they? Oh yes they do. I’m almost certain no one can resist rounded corners after this reason!
Conclusion
My humble opinion about rounded corners is that they look natural, have a warm and soft feel, and are sexy. There you have it. And yes, of course I have rounded corners on my site, what did you think?!?
